History of Longines
Nestled between the Swiss Jura mountains, Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Aggasiz. In 1878, the brand created its first instrument for timing sports events: a chronograph pocket watch containing a monopusher crown. Fast-forwarding to 1889, Longines was already able to measure to 1/5 of a second and soon it became the number one brand associated with sports timing for events such as famous horse racing.
Longines provided timers for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and its instruments were used in some of the first North Pole expeditions. Its winged logo is inspired by aviation and is recognised globally as a symbol of accurate sports watches and chronographs. The brand soon became renowned as a manufacturer of timekeeping equipment for professionals including pilots, navigators, explorers and sportsmen. Continually striving to improve the accuracy, precision and functionality of its watches, Longines swiftly made a name for itself as a pioneer of watchmaking.
